Hula in Edinburgh

The traditional Scottish breakfast, at least according to the restaurant menus in Edinburgh, includes haggis, black pudding, potato scone, and other things I won’t eat. The vegan versions all seem to be made with seitan and thus full of gluten. What this means is that vegan breakfast was challenging to find in Edinburgh, despite the city being very vegan friendly overall.

Hula came to the rescue. We actually had breakfast here two different days. The first day, we showed up a couple of minutes before they opened. Despite having their door wide open, they were rather rude to us about not being open yet. I didn’t understand the rudeness. People were sitting inside. I was happy to wait, but I wasn’t invited to do that. It rains a lot in Edinburgh, so this was frustrating. A few tables outside had a QR code to the menu, so I dug in and planned our order. The moment the site let me order, I did so and paid.

We were in a bit of a hurry to get to a bike tour, so I ordered something I knew would already be made. Scottish Oats or Porridge. Specifically, I picked out the Walker Porridge for myself. Hubby selected the Apple Crumble Porridge. Then we moved inside and picked a table. This confused the staff, but it was their fault.

The porridge was perfect for the day. Not overly sweet and filling for a long bike ride ahead.

On our second visit, Hubby picked out the Walker Porridge. I got the Vegan Poke Bowl that includes tofu scramble. We also each ordered a smoothie.

The Poke Bowl was good, and the smoothies were okay.

Hula gets two vegan cupcakes. Normally, two cupcakes mean I won’t return, but a healthy vegan breakfast was hard to find. I recommend the staff do better. On our second visit, we headed for a table in the back section that looked open. We were immediately told that the area was closed and a rope placed to let others know. It was also hard to get our check.
